Victoria in the Springtime

Victoria - April 2013

Victoria in the springtime is extra special… it’s pretty much the first city in Canada to be in bloom after a dreary winter.  It’s great to be there in April, walking around without a jacket and stepping on a carpet of pink blossoms while admiring the colourful tulips.

I was happy to hop on the ferry for an afternoon promotional photoshoot and spend a little time wandering around before hopping back on the ferry.

Here’s a few images from the afternoon:

Twelfth Day – Portraits of Sarah | Christmastide – 12 days of blogging

Sarah Law

Twelfth Night blog post! Thus ends my blog series during Christmastide: the 12 days of blogging.

I’m excited to share these portraits of Sarah from a night back in July where three friend-tographers got together in Gastown to photograph the lovely Sarah.

Sarah Law

We were practicing some off-camera lighting techniques but it was tough as the sunlight was so so beautiful that night!

Day Eleven: Chicago! – Travel Photography | Christmastide – 12 days of blogging

Cloudgate - Chicago - Photo by Marlis Funk

Hello again!

We’re almost at the end of the 12 days of blogging that coincides with Christmastide (the twelve days of Christmas.  Today we’re travelling to sunny CHICAGO!  We visited this past June to see Ken’s family and because WestJet had a really good seatsale.

Chicago is situated along Lake Michigan and we had some amazing summer weather!

There was so much to see.  Grant Park is an enormous public park full of art installations.  Millennium Park is a part of Grant Park and includes “Cloud Gate” by artist Anish Kapoor – better known “The Bean”.  It’s fun to look at and watch everyone else look at it too!  And very fun to photograph.

Crown Fountain is also located in Millennium Park.  It is an interactive art and video sculpture that opened in 2004.

The Amphitheatre is located in Millennium Park as well.

Buckingham Fountain in the centre of Grant Park is the one of the largest fountains in the world.  It was dedicated in 1927.

The Art Institute of Chicago is located in Grant Park as well.  It’s huge… we ran out of time when we arrived in the Photography collection, but I was able to view some historic original photos!

Such a magnificent park!

I learned so much about the amazing architecture from the Boat Tour put on by the Chicago Architecture Foundation.  I loved going under the many bridges over the Chicago River and watching them open up for taller boats.

The Willis Tower (above, far right) was the tallest skyscraper in the world when it was completed in 1973.  The top floor is the Skydeck with Ledges that allow you to stand ‘outside’ of the building.

It seems Chicago is a bit of a architects play-land.  So many stories and interesting buildings.

We rode the Chicago “L” (elevated train) around the city.  Some of the platforms were made of wood and felt a little rickety!  Each route had a different colour assigned to it.  Fun times.

We took the “L” to Wrigley Field to watch the Cubs play and toured the stadium first.

Day Ten: Ukrainian + Mexican = Mariachi at the Wedding! | Christmastide – 12 days of blogging

Adela + Keenan May 2011

Hello and welcome to Day 10!

We’re nearing the end of the 12 days of blogging that coincides with Christmastide (the twelve days of Christmas.

Today we’re going back a little farther than a year… to May of 2011, and the wedding of Adela and Keenan.  This wedding was not only a joining of families, it was a joining of two cultures – Mexican and Ukrainian.  The ceremony took place at the Holy Trinity Ukrainian Cathedral in Vancouver, and the reception was help at the University Golf Club, where Mariachi Del Sol performed.

When the doors were opened, it was HAILING!!!  This wasn’t the weather we started out with before the ceremony.

Adela + Keenan May 2011

It set us back a few minutes, but once it let up enough to get to our cars, we drove from Main Street to Point Grey and then UBC.  The weather got brighter as we went.

Day Nine: Writer Profiles: Portraits from the TWUC Conference | Christmastide – 12 days of blogging

Marion Crook - Imaging By Marlis

Hello friends!

Today is Day 9 of the 12 days of blogging that coincides with Christmastide (the twelve days of Christmas).

We’re looking back to May of this year, when The Writer’s Union of Canada hosted it’s AGM and OnWords Conference at the Holiday Inn in Vancouver.  I was the conference photographer and I set up a Headshot Portrait Marathon.

17 members signed up for our 4 hour event.  We included a studio portrait and a natural light (on-location) portrait.

It’s amazing the diversity of work within this group of writers/authors/editors!  Please click their names to see their websites.

Day Eight: Celebrating the First – Mila’s Party | Christmastide – 12 days of blogging

Mila and Sarb

Happy New Year!

It is Day 8 of the 12 days of blogging that coincides with Christmastide (the twelve days of Christmas).

Today we celebrate the first!  The first birthday of Mila.  This sweetheart’s party was in September and it was hosted by her parents.  Her mom, Sarb, is an amazing photographer (check out her work here: www.sarbglaze.com) and I can tell from the party that she has an amazing sense of design as well!  The details she put together made it even more fun to photograph.

Day Seven: Photographer as Subject | Christmastide – 12 days of blogging

Marlis Funk 07- Summer 2012

Hello and Happy New Year’s Eve!

It is Day 7 of the 12 days of blogging that coincides with Christmastide (the twelve days of Christmas).

Today’s post is a bit of a switcheroo – I’m the subject instead of the photographer!  It had been a few years since I had the opportunity to be properly photographed by a professional… it wasn’t that I was avoiding it, it was more that I didn’t know who I wanted to photograph me.  I have so many amazing photography friends and there are so many awesome photographers that I follow that I had trouble deciding.

I wanted it to be an experience that would help me better understand how my clients feel when they contact me and get ready for their session.  So I decided that this time I wanted to work with someone that I knew and trusted.  And someone who’s work I loved in a style that I envy because it’s not my style.

Then it came to me – Erin Weiss!  She’s from my hometown and we’ve known each other since we were wee ones and more so through our days at Camp Elim.  She’s an amazing artist and I love the things she creates with her company boolah baguette.  (That’s the link to her facebook page – go there and give her the thumbs-up!!)  And she does photography too.  Here’s her site: erin weiss photography.  She is based in Saskatoon, and I was going there this past summer.

So we set up the appointment and I was hoping for sunshine.  We had a limited window – the session was happening before I flew back to Vancouver, rain or shine.  Thankfully it was a glorious summer’s day!

I admit… I was a bit nervous.  But the excited-nervous kind instead of the scared-nervous.  It feels very different being on that side of the camera.  I totally trusted Erin and I wanted a session that was her style so I tried not to suggest too many things.  I picked two outfits that were my summer’s favourites and my favourite jewelry pieces.  I tried to just be myself in front of the camera.

I LOVED the experience.

Here are some of my favourite images:
